MRG Construction Corp (MRGC) used a helicopter to set 26 rooftop air conditioning units to Arie Crown Hebrew Day School in Skokie, IL on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 25th. These new roof top units will provide the needed heating, cooling, and ventilation throughout the school.
The helicopter landed in the school’s parking lot ready for action where workers swiftly outfit the aircraft with rigging. The helicopter then lifted the units staged in another part of the parking lot and placed them into position on the roof of the building. The entire process took about one hour.
Project Executive Phil Soto said that the helicopter lift/set was the only way to get the units in place expeditiously and on budget. “Normally we would use a crane,” he said. “But the challenge was trying to get one to reach all the way across the roof. This proved to be a faster, better, and more economical alternative.”
The helicopter lifted each unit off the ground using specialty rigging. MRGC collaborated with the company piloting the helicopter to execute a carefully planned and executed process to ensure the safety of the public, staff, and helicopter pilot.
Staff and the public were cleared from the work area for safety and could view the process from a safe distance. Onlookers excitedly watched the helicopter gently and deftly place each unit in its precise location. “It was really cool,” said one bystander. “I’ve never seen a helicopter land RTUs on a roof before.”
The helicopter lift/set proved to offer a unique way to get the school’s new AC units in place, overcoming obstacles as a safe and efficient way to get the job done. Plus, it provided a memorable experience for all audience members.
