Delivering Projects Safely on Time During COVID-19

Project Type:

Interior Tenant Build Out

Overview

A large, international coffee chain contracted MRG Construction Corp to build out a 2,000 SF end-cap space in Huntley, IL. Shortly after construction began, Illinois announced its Stay at Home order in response to the global Coronavirus pandemic. While construction was deemed an essential operation, procedures and workflows were shifted in order to abide by state regulations and guidance.

Method

The everchanging nature of a global pandemic necessitated extra communication to ensure the project remained on time and budget. The Project Manager, worked with site superintendent, Jose Orellano, to implement a new company-wide site safety plan. This included reducing onsite staff and trade overlap for the duration of the project as well as requiring sick employees to remain at home, promoting safe mask usage and conducting regular temperature checks.

MRG Construction Corp’s proactive approach kept the project focused on its tight 8-week timeline. When traditionally in person meetings were switched to digital platforms, the team increased coordination with the client and the village to ensure that all parties were aware of current and next steps.

While the MRG Construction Corp team pivoted to handle incoming challenges, other parties experienced issues outside their control. For example, one of the seating vendors was required to shut down its production. In order to accommodate the client’s needs and health codes, MRG Construction Corp coordinated different seating options from another operating vendor, keeping the project on its original timeline.

The project was primarily completed in 6 weeks with finishes and final features being integrated in the last two weeks. The client is now open for drive through service and plans to fully open its cafe in accordance with state guidelines.
